Pfizer Inc. is recalling Cialis, a generic version of the popular erectile dysfunction pill, after the company found significant traces of tadalafil in the recalled products.
The recall comes amid a surge in online sales of the erectile dysfunction drug, which is widely used to treat erectile dysfunction.
In a statement on Thursday, Pfizer said it was working closely with the public to address the issue.
“We are aware of the recall and are working with a number of pharmacies and health authorities to ensure that the recall is completed and all affected products are properly packaged and distributed,” the company said.
Cialis is the brand-name version of the prescription drug Cialis, which is also sold under the brand name Viagra. It is used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) in men. Cialis is sold under several different brand names, including Eli Lilly and Company, and is used to treat conditions such as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
Pfizer’s announcement comes amid a surge in online sales of the erectile dysfunction drug, which is widely used to treat erectile dysfunction.
Online sales of the erectile dysfunction drug have dropped more than 3 percent since April 2018, when the FDA’s first recall hit the U. S. market.
According to data from Secure Medical, the number of Americans experiencing erectile dysfunction has nearly doubled since 2019, with nearly 200,000 prescriptions written for erectile dysfunction drugs, including Cialis.
“Consumers should be aware that many of our medications contain the active ingredient tadalafil, which is a PDE5 inhibitor, which is used to treat ED,” said Mike Cag licensee of the recall.
The company said it was working closely with the FDA and other regulatory agencies to identify and prevent the potentially dangerous and potentially harmful ingredients in recalled Cialis products.

It has also been working with manufacturers of generic versions of the erectile dysfunction drug, called generic tadalafil, to identify and discontinue the recalled products.
In a separate statement, Pfizer said that it had received several reports of persistent side effects from the recalled products. It said that any reports of adverse effects, including a headache, vision problems, back pain, and muscle aches, should be reported to FDA’s MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting Program and to Pfizer’s responsible for reporting any adverse events.
The recall is the third time Pfizer has been linked to a similar issue.
Last month, the company said it had received reports of severe allergic reactions from the Cialis recall. Some of the adverse effects are listed on Pfizer’s MedWatch website.
Pfizer said in a statement, “This recall is the first time that a product has been recalled after a generic, FDA-approved medication has been identified as containing tadalafil.”
In August, the FDA announced it was approving tadalafil for use in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia and men with the common hereditary problems of benign prostatic hyperplasia.
Tadalafil is used to treat erectile dysfunction, also known as ED in men. ED is a condition in which a man is unable to achieve or maintain an erection sufficient for sexual intercourse.
In June, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advised that men with ED should not use tadalafil to treat their symptoms.
In November, the FDA announced it was recalling a total of 10,500 Cialis pills from the U. S., with the active ingredient, tadalafil, remaining on store shelves. Cialis is the active ingredient in Viagra, and was recalled for its potency and effectiveness.

Cialis® (Tadalafil) is a treatment for adult men with erectile dysfunction. This is the most complete and authoritative reference in erectile dysfunction (ED) treatment available, with more than 2,000 original studies published every day.
A prescription for Cialis® is valid for a period of one year. It is the generic version of Viagra® (Viagra Connect) and is the only ED treatment available without a prescription in the United States.
Cialis® (Tadalafil) is a daily prescription oral medication with a long-lasting effect of up to 36 hours. The drug's active ingredient, tadalafil, is in a class of medications known as phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors. Tadalafil, known chemically as Cialis®, is a PDE5 inhibitor that relaxes the muscles of the blood vessels of the penis and increases blood flow.
The drug is taken by mouth, usually once or twice daily with or without food. The effects can last for up to 36 hours.
Patients can take Cialis® with or without food. Cialis® is also used for pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) in women, and may also be used in men with erectile dysfunction. Cialis® (Tadalafil) is taken as needed before sexual activity, but it should not be taken more than once a day.
Patients should be advised that Cialis® may not be suitable for them if they have an underlying medical condition, are taking other medications, or are taking other forms of ED treatment such as vacuum devices.
Cialis® can cause side effects, including headaches, back pain, muscle pain, and muscle weakness. These side effects are usually mild and temporary.
In patients who are taking nitrates (used to treat angina or chest pain) or alpha-blockers, Cialis® can cause a dangerous drop in blood pressure when taken with alpha-blocker medications such as doxazosin (Cardura®). The risk of low blood pressure and stroke in these patients is greater than with alpha-blocker therapy alone.
Cialis® should not be used for recreational purposes, as it has not been shown to have any significant recreational or dangerous side effects.
The drug is not approved for the treatment of ED in women.
The most common side effects of Cialis® include back pain, muscle aches, flushing, headache, nasal congestion, and facial flushing. Some of the side effects include prolonged erections, headache, dizziness, nausea, and vomiting.
It is also not approved for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). In PAH treatment, Cialis® can cause a dangerous drop in blood pressure when taken with alpha-blocker medications such as doxazosin (Cardura®).
There are no data on the long-term safety of Cialis® in women.
Cialis® is not approved for use by men under the age of 18 years.
The drug has not been shown to be effective in treating erectile dysfunction.
In clinical trials, some men experienced a significant improvement in sexual function, although the impact on sexual desire was not fully determined. A significant number of men who took Cialis® reported mild to moderate side effects such as decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, or reduced ejaculate volume, and some also reported a decrease in the quality of life for those affected.
Cialis® is not approved for use by women.

1.Nitrates (e.g., nitroglycerin, isosorbide dinitrate): Cialis and nitrates both lower blood pressure. Taking them together can cause a significant and potentially life-threatening drop in blood pressure (hypotension), leading to dizziness, fainting, or even heart attack or stroke. It is contraindicated to use Cialis with nitrates or recreational "poppers" (amyl nitrites).

While this interaction is usually less severe than with nitrates or alpha-blockers, it can still cause dizziness or fainting in sensitive individuals. Close monitoring of blood pressure is recommended.

Similar to (2), Cialis (tadalafil) can interact with certain foods and beverages, such as grapefruit and grapefruit juice.
